The last roars are for Rory McIlroy at Bay Hill

Mar 19, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. — The loudest roars at Bay Hill were for tiger Woods. The last ones were for Rory McIlroy. McIlroy left some indelible images of his own Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a back-nine charge that would have made the King proud, and a final putt on the 18th green that a delirious gallery had seen for so many years from Woods. McIlroy ran off five birdies over his last six holes and closed with an 8-under 64 for a three-shot victory. He won for the first time since the Tour Championship on Sept. 25, 2016, the...

Del Potro edges Federer in sets to win Indian Wells title

Mar 19, 2018

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Juan Martin del Potro rallied from three match points down in the third set and beat top-ranked Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2) to win the BNP Paribas Open and hand the Swiss superstar his first loss of the year. Del Potro became the first Argentine winner in the 42-year history of the desert tournament. Federer's 17-match winning streak — the best start of his career — ended. Del Potro survived three-setters against countryman Leonardo Mayer in the fourth round and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinals. It was his first win against Federer since last...

Woods makes a brief run at Bay Hill until a big miss

Mar 19, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods put on a Sunday charge at Bay Hill that looked all too familiar. One swing changed everything at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Coming off three birdies and two pars saves that brought him to within one shot of the lead, Woods hammered a tee shot so far left on the par-5 16th hole that it went over the fence, into a backyard and out-of-bounds. A birdie or better turned into a bogey, and ultimately it didn't matter when Rory McIlroy closed with five birdies in his last six holes to win. Woods made bogey from...

Man United-Spurs, Chelsea-Southampton in FA Cup semifinals

Mar 19, 2018

LONDON — Manchester United will play Tottenham in the FA Cup semifinals at Spurs' temporary Wembley Stadium home. The draw Sunday saw last year's finalist Chelsea face Southampton in the other semifinal. Both matches will be played at Wembley over the weekend of April 21-22. Wembley is the designated neutral ground for the semifinals — and final — but Tottenham is well accustomed to it after taking up temporary residence at the national stadium this season while its home at White Hart Lane is being redeveloped. The draw followed Sunday's quarterfinals where Chelsea beat Leicester 2-1 thanks to Pedro's extra...

Twins SS Polanco suspended 80 games for drug violation

Mar 19, 2018

NEW YORK — Minnesota Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The commissioner's office announced the penalty Sunday. Polanco tested positive for Stanozolol and became the sixth player to be banned this year under the major league drug program — one more than last year. Polanco hit .256 with 13 home runs and 74 RBIs last season while starting 127 games at shortstop. The 24-year-old also stole 13 bases in helping the Twins earn an AL wild-card spot. In a statement released by the players' union, Polanco said he didn't "intentionally...
